Now, tell the truth. Isn't this one of the best looking dead dogs you have ever seen? I thought so, too. Meet Cisco, race name Free Decision, the 3-legged beast that has taken over my heart. And house, now that I think about it. Cisco was running Grade AA when he took a tumble and suffered a very bad break to his back right leg. The track vet recommended that he be euthanized, and considering the severity of the break, many people would probably have made that choice. Fortunately for Cisco, and me, his trainer, Jon Venuto, just couldn't allow it. He gave Cisco to us to place. We had his leg evaluated, and the recommendation was not to repair it due to the pain and lengthy period of rehabilitation. So, amputation it was. Jon agreed to take the first night after surgery, which is always the worst. I brought him to my house the next night knowing that we had 2 families waiting to look at him. Well, he was in my house a few days and I realized I would never be able to give him up. Cheryl Bates, one of the folks who had wanted to adopt him, told me she knew instantly that he was "home" the minute she saw him at my house.
Cisco loves going to visit Jonny and his family.
Cisco has become a favorite at our weekly Meet & Greet
during the live season at Cloverleaf Kennel Club. Some folks
objected to a "crippled" Greyhound coming to meet the
public. That didn't last long. One of the track patrons came
over and recognized Cisco. He and his father were so excited
to see him! They had followed his racing career, and had
feared he had been euthanized after his accident. Cisco has
taught many people that 3-legged dogs are adoptable, and
they do have wonderful lives.
Cisco is spoiled, I admit it. He is also afraid of thunder and prefers to spend the night in the bathroom when we have storms. He makes me crazy sometimes because he insists on standing outside the house, head through the dog door, and whining at me to go outside with him. And I hope no one feels sorry for him...He has a great life!
