JAN'S HOUNDS

Welcome to Jan's Kennel

A FULL COUCH

A HOUSE FULL OF GREYS

Hello, my name is Jan, and I'm a Greyhound addict. Sounds a little silly, no? Well, after you become acquainted with a few Greyhounds, you find they have a way of getting under your skin.

For me, it all started in March 1994. I was dogless, having lost Rebel, my German Shepherd mix companion of 15 years. A friend told me I had to meet some Greyhounds. I had no intention of falling head-over-heels in love with them, but that's what happened.

I was convinced to go to an adoption kennel. It was appalling. There were some small buildings crammed full of Greyhounds and so much dirt! I don't think those kennels had been cleaned for years. Then they let the dogs out for me to see. So many of them, all jumping and acting silly, except one. Razor, a big fawn male with big doe eyes. He was a "spook." He stayed as far away from me as he possible could. Of course, I felt so sorry for him, I decided I wanted to try and make friends. So, as I was sitting on the ground, trying to convince him to let me touch him, this little black female came over and climbed right into my lap. Shy Fly, now queen of the house, was a pathetic little dirty girl with a big, infected hole in her neck.

We packed Shy and Razor off in my friend's van, and the both went home with me. The next day, Shy went to the vet and had surgery to repair her neck.

I was totally unprepared to be a Greyhound owner. Razor continued to be a spook. He would go outside and then wouldn't come back in the house. I had to leave the door open and go hide, and hope he would decide to come in. Shy, obviously, didn't feel well. She planted herself on my new couch and didn't move for days. All I could think was "what have I gotten myself into?" Slowly, they wormed their way into my heart. OK, it only took a few days, but there was never any doubt that they would stay with me.

Over the next few months, I also started on a journey from anti-Greyhound racing advocate to being a friend and supporter of Greyhound racing. But that's a story for another page!
